Teen star growing up

Posted May 11, 2006

On "Awake Is The New Sleep," 26-year-old Ben Lee makes the transition from teen wunderkind to legitimate adult singer/songwriter. The native of Sydney, Australia, made a splash at age 14 in the early-90s punk-pop outfit, Noise Addict. Mr. Lee's band received accolades from The Beastie Boys and Sonic Youth and generated buzz in the indie-rock press. Mr. Lee's solo career began with "Grandpaw Would" and expanded with the albums "Something To Remember Me By," "Breathing Tornados," and "Hey You, Yes You." Extensive touring with Ben Harper, Jack Johnson, Rufus Wainwright, and Fugazi expanded his profile when his songs didn't attract the attention of pop radio stations.

In addition to his solo efforts, Mr. Lee has collaborated as a songwriter and musician with Ben Folds, Evan Dando, Kylie Minogue, and Montreal's pop duo Pony Up! His Vineyard performance is an opportunity to see Ben Lee before he embarks upon summer tours with Dashboard Confessional and Nickel Creek.

Ben Lee at Outerland, Martha's Vineyard Airport, Sat., May 13, Show for ages 18 and up. Doors open at 8 pm.
