The annual Earth Day Beach Cleanup was scheduled in May this year in the hopes for better weather, according to Vineyard Conservation Society (VCS) organizer Sarah Parks. But it was not to be. Saturday's pouring rain continued during the two hours slated for the cleanup, and only the hardiest, some of them dressed in full foul weather gear, wandered the beaches in search of trash. Ms. Parks had contacted many Island organizations that agreed to help in the cleanup, and most of the showed up, but not in the numbers a sunny day might have brought out.
