Chilmark

By Jacqueline Sexton - May 18, 2006

The trees and shrubs have been reveling in nature's bountiful amounts of rainfall. They're all washed clean and showing off their beautiful new green leaves. The cherry trees and the ornamental cherry are in full bloom, while the lilacs are getting ready to burst forth. It must be spring.

Congratulations to Cathy Thompson, who graduated Sunday with a Master of Science degree from the graduate school of the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana. The school was ranked the best library school in the country in a recent study by U. S. News and World Report.

Ms. Thompson did the full-time, online course in two years while holding down her fulltime job as library director. No mean feat. Her web design, part of the course, has been chosen by the Baltimore County Library System for its teen-age web site.

"It was a lot of fun, and I made lifelong friends," Ms. Thompson says. Quite an achievement!

Phyllis Conway, coordinator of the summer flea market, reports that there are a few openings for vendors available for this summer. Anyone interested may telephone her at 508-645-9216. She says "No jewelry, please!"

School children enjoyed a talk this week by Kate Feiffer at the library. Ms. Feiffer discussed her book "Double Pink," about a girl who loved the color pink. The author's talks are part of the school-library program.

Mitchell Posin talked this week at the Wednesday evening discussion series at the library, sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

Chilmark poet John Maloney read old poems and new ones at the Outerland series of poetry and music last week. Mr. Maloney wrote "Town of Chilmark" for the town's tricentennial in 1995.

We should have a town birthday party for all the celebrants whose birthdays are on May 27. They are: Cathy Thompson, Janice Brown, John Wehncke and John Kosbowski. (Mr. Kosbowski lives in Aquinnah, but that's close enough!) Phil Derick celebrated last Monday, May 15, and his wife, Gail Derick will observe her birthday next Thursday, May 25.

And Lois and Greg Mayhew and Kay and Peter Teel each have wedding anniversaries on May 31.

Many happy days and happy returns to all of you.
