Host an exchange student

The Rotary Club of Martha's Vineyard is searching for families to host an exchange student for the 2006-7 school year.

The student is an 18-year-old boy from Colombia who will be attending Martha's Vineyard Regional High School. The Rotary Club is looking for three families who will each host the student for three months.

From our libraries

Lots of wonderful things are happening at our libraries as they gear up for summer. Changes in personnel, the summer reading program, and an opportunity to help are just a few items of interest.

The Chilmark Public Library is saying good-bye to librarian Cathy Thompson with a farewell party on Saturday, June 3, from 5 to 7 pm. The party is hosted by the Friends of the Chilmark Library.

A welcome party for Howard Curtis, the new library director of the West Tisbury Public Library, will take place on Monday, June 12, at that library.

The Oak Bluffs Public Library is looking for a few good men, or women, to read to children on Saturday mornings in July and August. If you are a good storyteller or reader, and would like to help, contact Irene Tewksbury at 508-693-9433 for all the details.

Each year the libraries join in and promote summer reading for children with a fun program. The theme changes each summer, and this year it's "What's Buzzin' @ the Library." Look for a magical kickoff celebration at 11 am on Saturday, July 1, at the Ag Hall in West Tisbury.

Relay For Life weekend

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life will take place this weekend at the Martha's Vineyard Regional High School track. Beginning on Friday afternoon, June 2 and running continuously through noon on Saturday, June 3, the relay will bring together teams of people to raise money for the society.

This year, there are more teams and the teams are bigger than ever. Each team will have a campsite and if past years are any indication, the sites will be decorated in fantastic displays.

Highlights will include the opening ceremony at 6 pm; a survivors' lap at 6:30 pm with bagpiper; the lighting of candles at 9 pm, and a memorial lap. Be sure to stop by the track and lend your support to the walkers who will be doing laps all night long.

Matt Maher to appear at Island beach retreat

Matt Maher, the nationally acclaimed Christian rock musician, will appear on the Island for two performances this weekend. The first will be at the "Beach Retreat" sponsored by the Lifeteen Youth Ministry of the Good Shepherd Parish on Martha's Vineyard at Pay Beach in Oak Bluffs from noon to 5 pm this Saturday, June 3.

On Sunday, June 4, 7 pm, at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church in Oak Bluffs Matt will lead an XLT worship in prayer and song in the setting of Eucharistic Adoration. Admission is free, but donations are welcome.

Matt will be featured on PAX-TV on June 2 and the "Hour of Power" at the Crystal Cathedral on June 3. He's appeared on EWTN television and is a regular worship leader at Passion 326 in Nashville, at ARISE, and at SOULFEST. His song "Litany of the Saints" was sung by Pope John Paul II at World Youth Day in Toronto in 2002.

Retreat tickets, $10, at the Edgartown Book Store, or call 508-693-0342, ext. 12, or at the beach on the day of the retreat. Visit www.spiritandsong.com/artists/mattmaher.
