A feast to remember

Gourmets and gourmands, fun-lovers and food-lovers will pack the tents on the Old Whaling Church lawn in Edgartown tonight for the Martha's Vineyard Preservation Trust's 21st annual Taste of the Vineyard Gourmet Stroll. The much-anticipated gala event features delectable offerings from more than 75 local caterers, restaurateurs, and beverage purveyors.

Always a popular and well-attended event, the Taste gives guests the chance to sample the best edibles to be had on the Island while helping the preservation organization in its work to purchase and restore important Vineyard properties. The menu ranges from exotic hors d'ouevres to rich and decadent desserts and includes everything in between. Wine lovers will enjoy the opportunity of trying a wide variety of brands and types to match with their food and there will be beer and non-alcoholic beverages too. The array of delicacies is vast, and after eating well, guests may work off the calories and enjoy socializing as Jerry Bennett and the Sultans of Swing play for dancing.

YMCA benefit

The SLIP, the YMCA of Martha's Vineyard's youth council is hosting an all-ages show at the Outerland. The So We Are Having A Concert (SWAHAC) lineup includes the Unbusted, Pettit Gurlz, The Meow Meows, Kahoots, the Taylor Brown Trio, and others. Ticket price includes free soda.

First Light Night

BravEncore is a new non-profit student organization of the Martha's Vineyard Regional High School's drama department. This week they are hosting their first event in conjunction with Bob Glover, the new director of the Oak Bluffs Business Assoc. The first Light Night, a Summer Solstice Block Party will be held on Circuit Avenue, Oak Bluffs. The avenue will be closed to all traffic starting at 5 pm. The event features entertainment in the Post Office Square from bands such as The Walls and the "Blues Brothers," and stand-up comedy. Many shops, galleries restaurants and inns will be participating in the event.

Searching for truth, etc.

Author Perry Garfinkel will be at the Bunch of Grapes Bookstore Vineyard Haven on Friday, June 16, to talk about his new book, "Buddha or Bust: In Search of Truth, Meaning, Happiness, and the Man Who Found Them All." It is being published this month by Harmony Books, a division of Random House. Mr. Garfinkel is a former Times calendar editor.

The book expands on Mr. Garfinkel's Dec. 2005 article for National Geographic and he presents Buddhism as a practical approach to solving problems.
