Familiar faces return to the Island

By Julian Wise - July 13, 2006

Richard Buckner returns. The independent rock legend performs at Offshore Ale in advance of a new record coming out on Merge Records (home to Arcade Fire, Magnetic Fields, and Superchunk). The as-yet-untitled disc includes guest guitarist Doug Gillard of Guided by Voices. In the past Mr. Buckner has recorded for MCA, Rykodisc, and Overcoat Records. After a stint in the short-lived San Francisco band The Doubters, Mr. Buckner embarked on a solo career that includes the critically acclaimed album "Dents and Shells." Mr. Buckner is joined by opening act Lo Fine, the songwriting vehicle of Kevin O'Rourke from Western Massachusetts. In the past Mr. O'Rourke has collaborated with members of the bands, Spouse and Hospital. The band will release their second full-length album this fall and will return to Martha's Vineyard on August 5th to play a concert at the Katharine Cornell Theater in Vineyard Haven.

WVVY benefit

Local singer/songwriter Willy Mason, currently on tour in England to support his burgeoning career, will return to Martha's Vineyard to perform at the WVVY benefit performance at Outerland alongside Unbusted. Both bands came of age in the local music scene and have achieved success in mainstream music by combining songwriting chops and low-key charisma. Mr. Mason's "Oxygen" single and video gained significant popularity in England, and The Unbusted provided three tracks for the soundtrack to the Farrelly Brothers film "Stuck On You." The concert is a benefit for WVVY, the independent radio station that hopes to get on the air once its funding goals are met.
