Oak Bluffs

By Megan Alley - July 13, 2006

Do I dare even whisper that perhaps the flooding rainstorms have at last ended? Now we are the recipients of sunny, if somewhat humid, days. Bright green lawns and blooming flowers and shrubs were the result of those monotonous rains. Our seasonal visitors have arrived and are smiling at these sunny days. And of course we are all on the "planning our shopping to avoid the worst of the traffic and long lines" mode.

Ruth Siple's death last week leaves us saddened and we send our condolences to her husband Doug and her daughter Kristen. Ruth's voice was always full of smiles when she called me with news of her daughter or of her grandson. We will miss her.

We send birthday smiles to Donna Tomkins on July 13, Sophie Combra on July 16, Summer Clements on July 17, and Lynn Webster on July 19.

Extra-special anniversary wishes to former neighbors but still friends, Jamie and Marge Harris, who celebrated 40 years together on Friday last with a wonderful backyard celebration with their family and many friends.

Irene Tewksbury, the children's librarian at the Oak Bluffs Library, has sent out a request for clean, empty, plastic, single-serving soda bottles with no labels on them. She would appreciate any you might have for a special firefly crafts program before July 26.

Marie Hearn's visit with her mother, Ann Hearn, at Woodside Village ended unfortunately with Marie getting ill and after a brief stay at our hospital, being transported off Island to a mainland facility for surgery. The good news is that she is recovering quite nicely and was so expertly and kindly treated at our own hospital.

The three-part lecture series, courtesy of the Community Solar Green house and the Oak Bluffs Public Library will continue on Thursday, July 20, at 6:30 pm in the meeting room of the Oak Bluffs Public Library. This series of practical gardening information is designed to provide an introduction to Botany. Alicia Lesnikowski, who has a PhD in Botany and trained as a Master Gardener, will be speaking on "Survival Gardening - How Plants Cope." Door prizes (plants and herbs) will be given to lucky winners. You may call the library for more information at 508-693-9433.

SFC Pete Forend, OBFD Assistant Chief, is arriving home from Kuwait on July 17. He will have to travel for quite a while before he arrives here to see his family so only plans to rest up for a few days. Then Pete is planning a visit to his mother's in Wareham on July 19 with his brother Tom on their motorcycles. But save July 22 for a special celebration at the P.A. Club in Oak Bluffs. Come and say hello. He has missed you all.

Enjoy your week and send your news along to me.
