Tisbury

By Kay Mayhew - July 13, 2006

This year the Tisbury Street Fair did not seem as busy nor did it have as many booths as usual. It was, however, as always a good time to see neighbors who have vanished as the summer visitors arrived. I think I saw most of the familiar faces as everyone was lining up for hamburgers and linguica burgers cooked by the firemen.

The Street Fair draws all ages. Adults cluster around the shop stalls. I understand a lot of shoes were sold in front of the Green Room. You can buy chances to benefit non- profits for almost anything, from a lovely handmade quilt to 20 pounds of lobsters. A number of children seemed most entranced with the climbing wall. Bigger kids tossed balls for baskets or prizes. Many little ones were being helped up into the real fire engine, to sit in the seat and touch the steering wheel as they imagined great adventures.

I forgot to tell you the date for the discussion of Baldacci's "Wish You Well." The Library Book Club will meet at 1:30 pm a week from today, on Thursday, July 20. The library is holding several copies so you can join in the discussion.

See Patricia Neal and meet Stephen Shearer at the Bunch of Grapes Bookstore next Tuesday between 4 and 7 pm. They will be signing his new biography called "Patricia Neal: An Unquiet Life."

The Tisbury Travel Club and the Council on Aging are offering special $10 seating to some Thursday 3 pm matinees at the Vineyard Playhouse. Seniors are invited for August 3 to see Jules Feiffer's "Knock, Knock" and August 24 to see Rowan Noone's "The Blowin' of Baile Gall." If you are over 55, call the travel club at the senior center to sign up in advance (508-696-4205).

Sandy Whitworth reports that the senior center is very busy. Whether knitting, playing bridge, listening to playreading, or watching movies, your neighbors know the place to go. Sandy invites all Tisbury seniors to the BBQ at 12 noon on Monday, July 31, at the center. Say good-bye to July with a cookout with our selectmen. Denys Wortman will be at the grill, Tristan Israel will play guitar, and Tom Pachico will serve ice cream. Get your tickets before July 24 because space is limited. $5 will get you hamburgers, hot dogs, potato salad, green salad, lemonade, iced tea, and a make-your-own sundae. Your ticket will also give you three tries for a hole-in-one on the putting machine.

CB Stark is chairing the auction to benefit the Vineyard House next Thursday, July 20. The Vineyard House is a safe sober place for Islanders in early recovery from substance abuse. The event is more than a water tasting. Kate and Issac Taylor will sing. Tickets are available at CB Stark Jewelers on Main Street.

Happy anniversary to Marilyn and Jack O'Callaghan who celebrate on Monday. Big bunches of birthday balloon wishes go out today to Nevenka Daniels. Happy birthday to Cord Bailey, and Alanna Major on Friday. Saturday belongs to Jocelyn Ciancio Broadley. It's party time on Sunday for Jim Richardson. Wish a happy one on Monday to Chris Clark.

Heard on Main Street: "I support two teams: the Red Sox and whoever beats the Yankees."
