Elvis refashioned

Island artist Enos Ray, who is known for his paintings of blues and gospel singers, is working on a life-size painting of Elvis Presley outside the Stanley Murphy Gallery where he shows his work. Mr. Ray is actually re-doing the piece that he completed some time ago for Middle Road resident Caitlyn Jones. His project just happened to coincide with the day of Elvis's death on August 16. Drive by the gallery on South Road in Chilmark to see Enos and Elvis all this week.

Two-person show at Belushi Pisano

This Friday from 5 to 8 pm the Belushi Pisano Gallery will host a reception for Deborah T. Colter and Duy Huynh, two artists whose new work will be on display through Sept. 7. Ms. Colter's mixed media collages are colorful abstractions that she produces locally. Her work is part of numerous corporate and private collections and has been featured at fine art galleries since 1981. Vietnamese-born Duy Huynh is now based in Charlotte, North Carolina. His figurative paintings, which are also part of many collections, depict images that relate to physical and spiritual journeys. The Belushi Pisano Gallery is at 18 State Road (across the street from the Martha's Vineyard Co-op Bank). Art over time at the Field Gallery

Vineyard Haven artist Peggy Turner Zablotny celebrates her 10-year anniversary at the Field Gallery where 14 of her new botanical collage fine art prints will be on display for two weeks beginning Sunday, Aug. 27. Accompanying Ms. Zablotny's work is a retrospective of Rose Abrahamson's paintings, some of which will be displayed for the first time.

More than 50 color images comprise Rabbi Joshua Plaut's newest collection entitled "Fragments: World, Ethnic, Jewish Photographs." His photography represents 25 years of travel and documents people and cultures from around the world. Before traveling to museums and galleries across the country and abroad, the exhibit will be shown on the Island this Saturday, Aug. 26, and Sunday, Aug. 27, from 3:30 to 7 pm at the Plaut Residence in West Tisbury. Seascapes and Book Signing at Cousen Rose

Stephen D. Rose's acrylic seascapes will be on view at Cousen Rose Gallery beginning this Saturday, Aug. 26. A reception will be held for the artist from 5 to 7 pm, and the historian and author John Hope Franklin will also be present to sign his book "Mirror to America. "Children and Play"

For art with a youthful theme, visit Four Generations Art Gallery, where artist Paul Ortlip, the father of five girls, has often included images of children in his work. Mr. Ortlip produced a large series of paintings on-site for Palisades Amusement Park and several are on display for the first time in this show. This Sunday, Aug. 27, marks the close of the show with a champagne reception from 5 to 8 pm. "Island Colors"

Louisa Gould Gallery is currently showing "Island Colors," a collection that represents the work of 12 artists, many of them Island residents. See oil paintings, works on paper, photography and jewelry -all on view through Sept. 7. The gallery is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm and until 8 pm on Saturday and Sunday at 15 Beach Road Extension in Vineyard Haven (across from the Black Dog Tavern). 508-693-7373.

New at Craven Gallery

The landscape paintings of Christie Scheele and mixed media work of Susan Colgan will be featured at Carol Craven Gallery beginning this Sunday, Aug. 27 from 5 to 7 pm. Ms. Scheele's collection, entitled "Here and There," represents various settings in a soft-focused, and often minimalist style. Ms. Colgan's "Caught in Summer" portrays the season's delights and the enjoyment of them in encaustic, oil, and watercolor.
