Ruth Wortman

Ruth (Coughlan) Wortman of Westlake, Ohio, and the Campground died on August 23 at her summer home. She was 93. She was the wife of Weldon W. Wortman who predeceased her in August of 1993. She is survived by her daughters, Sally Dagnall of Tallmadge, Ohio, and the Campground, Jan Levine of Pittsburg, Pa., and Julie Wortman of Tenant's Harbor, Maine.

James H. Rolston

James Howard Rolston died on August 24 with his children and grandchildren at his bedside. He was born on April 21, 1924 to the parents of James Howard Sr. and Ida Mae (O'Healey) Rolston. He was a retired carpenter and also an avid gardener.

He served in the Marines during World War II and Korean War. He predeceased his beloved wife Barbara Jane (Gregg), also his sister Gloria Mae (Murgida).

Mr. Rolston is survived by a daughter, Diane Elizabeth (Duart); a son, James Kenneth Rolston; and a daughter, Doreen Marie (Cartwright); and his grandchildrenm Sean Michael Duart, Joanne Elizabeth Rolston, James Kenneth Rolston Jr., Patrick Brian Rolston. Also many "furry" grandchildren.

There will be a private graveside service at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne with full military honors. There will be a celebration of Mr. Rolston's life on Sunday, Sept. 24, 12 noon at the Portuguese American Club, Vineyard Ave, Oak Bluffs. Carol A. Berryman

Carol A. Berryman

Carol Ann (Rice) Berryman of Tisbury, also known to many as "Mimi," was a familiar person on Martha's Vineyard. She was born in Lyndonville, Vt., on Sept. 4, 1943, the daughter of Harold John and Olivette (Grenier) Rice and grew up on the family farm there. She died at her home in Tisbury on Aug. 24 after a long and courageous battle with cancer that claimed her life but could not diminish her spirit. She left this life as she lived it, surrounded by the family she cherished. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her, and remembered fondly for her kind heart, unshakable faith in God, and her complete love and devotion to her many grandchildren.

She attended the Lyndonville public schools and was graduated from Lyndon Institute in 1961. In March, 1964, she was married to Robert Francis Berryman, who died on July 25, 2000. Their marriage was ended in 1975.

She worked as a baker and a chef for most of her life, in restaurants, hotels, and bakeries all along the East Coast. She was best known for creating cakes for every occasion, and especially wedding cakes. In the spring of 1988, her travels brought her to Martha' s Vineyard, where she remained for the rest of her life. Her Vermont childhood home and the Great Smokey Mountains of Gatlinburg, Tenn., were her other favorite places.

Her strong faith in God was a hallmark of her life, and she attended Pentecostal churches everywhere she lived. Most recently, she attended the Vineyard Assembly of God Church regularly until her illness.

She is survived by her three brothers, Michael W. Rice, Richard J. Rice, and John H. Rice, all of Vermont; her seven children and their families, including Barry L. Berryman of Vanceboro, N. C., and his daughter Ashley, Stephanie E. Berryman-DePaula of Tisbury, her husband Jose Claudio DePaula and their children Alekzandria Scott, Diego, Rodrigo, Thiago and Lucas; her daughter Marcia B. DeAngelis-Ori of Lyndonyille, Vt., and her children John Joseph and Julia Theresa; her son Brian K. Berryman of Yarmouth, Maine., his wife Catherine Ann and their son Jonathan Paul; her daughter JenniferLyn A. Berryman of Tisbury, her daughter Leslie M. DeOliviera and her daughters Brandy Marie and Denim Lace, and her daughter Theresa A. Berryman-Moore of Oak Bluffs and her children Emma Olivette, Savannah Margaret and Jasper Hale, and her granddaughter Jasmine Reed of Oak Bluffs.

A memorial service was held on August 28 at the Vineyard Assembly of God Church in Tisbury. A second memorial service will be held at the Rice family farm on Pudding Hill in Lyndonville, Vt. on Friday, Sept. 1, at 3 pm with a reception immediately following.

Caroline Y. Rheault

Caroline Young Rheault died at her Oak Bluffs home on Tuesday, Aug. 29.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, Sept. 11, at 11 am at the First Congregational Church of West Tisbury, State Road, West Tisbury.

Joseph Stiles, Jr.

Joseph Stiles Jr. of Tisbury died on August 28, in Falmouth. His funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, Sept. 1, at 11 am at St. Augustine's Church, Franklin Avenue, Vineyard Haven. Burial will follow in the Oak Grove Cemetery, State Road, Vineyard Haven with full military honors offered by the Veteran's of Martha's Vineyard. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, August 31, 6 to 8 pm at the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, Edgartown Vineyard Haven Road, Oak Bluffs.
