Time out for couples

A retreat is planned for Saturday, Sept. 16, at the Good Shepherd Parish Center on School Street in Oak Bluffs. Facilitator Peggy Patenaude will present "Time Out: A Couples Retreat."

Take time out from busy lives to reconnect with your spouse. Sessions will address practical and real issues of committed relationships. Couples will leave the retreat energized and empowered to live each day more fully.

Register by Saturday, Sept. 9, $100 per couple.

Nantucket Soundkeeper

The Alliance to Protect Nantucket Sound announces the organization of a Martha's Vineyard chapter, to be headed by Dean S. Bragonier of Tisbury.

According to information from the group, Nantucket Soundkeeper is working to preserve the sound's ecological, cultural, recreational, and aesthetic qualities through advocacy, public education, and legal action.

Grant proposals sought

The Permanent Endowment Fund is seeking application from non-profit organization and public agencies for grants from the General Discretionary Fund and the James P. Cahen Fund.

Deborah Hale, fund chair, said "requests should address important local issues. In addition, we are looking for specific projects that deal with medical and health care services, especially for lower income residents."

Library plans for future

If you would like to have a say in the future direction of the Oak Bluffs Public Library, come to the meeting on Monday, Sept. 11, at 1 pm. The Library Trustees and community leaders would like your input and comments on the direction of the library.

Adult learning program

The Martha's Vineyard Adult Learning Program begins its ninth year offering free English classes to Island adults who do not speak English as a first language. This is the Island's only full-service, non-profit English program for adults. Also offered are services such as educational goal setting and social counseling.

All classes are held at the Martha's Vineyard Regional High School and meet twice a week, either Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday, from 7 to 9:30 pm. Classes begin Monday, Sept. 11, and run through May 18, 2007.

One-of-a-kind

Make a garden bench that's a work of art on Saturday, Sept. 16, at the Polly Hill Arboretum, State Road, West Tisbury. Once again Janice Shields will teach her popular Garden Bench Workshop and take participants through the step-by-step process to build a rustic bench from all natural materials.

The workshop runs from 9 am to 2 pm. All you need are a few tools, a lunch, and some energy. Ms. Shields provides the rest.

Vineyard skunks

Luanne Johnson will tell you everything you ever wanted to know about our special skunk population on Wednesday, Sept. 13, at 5:30 pm at the Chilmark Public Library.
