Town Columns

Oak Bluffs

By Megan Alley - September 14, 2006

If you have seen fewer young people about town this past week, perhaps it is because the Oak Bluffs School opened for the school year on Thursday. A morning all-school assembly was held to welcome all of the new students and staff, some of them from as far away as Spain, the Virgin Islands, and Canada, as well as from many different states. Eight new staff members are now at the school and at least five veteran staff members now hold different positions. Once again, one of the primary goals of the school for this year is to increase parental involvement in school. You are encouraged to participate by either being a classroom representative or as a member of the PTO. Please call the school for more information.

Our very deepest sympathy to the family of Joyce Balboni, who died this week after a long illness. She was a person who always held her hand out to help not only her family but also friends and passing acquaintances. She will be greatly missed by so many people and we are so very sorry.

The Times has started placing ads in the Calendar Section each week that feature a picture and a brief bio of its town correspondents to encourage people to call us with their news. Last week's ad featured the Oak Bluffs Column. Unfortunately, due to an editing error, the phone number listed was not mine. So I do hope no one tried to call that number to reach me for news. My correct phone number, as listed at the top of this column is 508-693-0850. And take a look at the ad that is repeated this week - this time with the correct phone number!

Congratulations to Jen Jenkinson and Dave Araujo on the birth of their son Ryan Anthony Araujo. Ryan was born on Sept. 10 and weighed 8 pounds, 10 ounces. His grandparents are Tony and Sandy Ferreira. Ryan is a fifth generation Islander on his mother's side which includes his great-grand mother Susan Jenkinson, and great-great grandmother Bernice Benway. On his father's side he is the fourth generation and has grandparents David and Myrna Araujo, and great-grandmother Audria Tankard. What a lucky baby, with all of those grandparents to spoil him.

Extra special get well wishes to Betty Rose, Gerry Correllus, and Betty Alley. We wish you all speedy recovery.

Birthday smiles to Rick Kelly on Saturday and special, special wedding anniversary smiles to Rick and Pat Kelly on Sunday, Sept. 17.

Caleb Caldwell is welcoming Matt and Gayle Long of Fredericksburg, Va., for a week's stay. Matt and Gayle have never been to the Vineyard before and are very excited to meet and greet all of the local characters (sadly, minus Mel) they have always heard so much about. Be sure to say "Hello."

We send birthday smiles to Maryann Alwardt's twin grandchildren Cory and Amber Medeiros on Sept. 20.

The Oak Bluffs Public Library would like to remind everyone that September is Library Card Sign-up Month. A mystery prize will be awarded to one lucky person who signs up for a new Oak Bluffs Library Card this month! Please stop by the library to pick up the smartest card of all. Get it. Use it at your library.
