Last Saturday the skies over Edgartown filled with hundreds of butterflies, released from Felix Wildlife Sanctuary, in a special event for Hospice of Martha's Vineyard. More than 70 people released 350 butterflies to honor the memory of a loved one.
According to an American Indian legend, if anyone desires a wish to come true, they must whisper it to a butterfly and the butterfly will take the message to the Great Spirit. In gratitude for giving the butterfly its freedom, the Great Spirit will grant the wish.
Hospice board member Linda Hughes said the event was an incredible experience. The rain stopped just as the butterflies were to be released.

Ms. Hughes said that on Saturday, people asked if this will become an annual event. Since it was so successful, Hospice hopes to do it again.
After the butterflies were released, everyone enjoyed refreshments of butterfly-shaped cookies and apple cider.
Look for the butterflies.
