Get into the swing
Swing dance instructors Linda and Chester Freeman will be on the Island again this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 21 and 22, at Outerland in Edgartown. The pair taught a class at the Yard last summer as part of the weekly community dance program.
The Saturday workshop begins at 11 am with a two-hour class for those who are new to swing or need a refresher. At 2 pm a more advanced class begins. On Sunday from 1 to 3 pm, the class is for those who know the basics and anyone who took the Saturday classes. On Sunday, the class will be based on the original eight-count Lindy Hop from the 1930s and 40s. Saturday evening show off your new steps with the Freemans and dance to live music by the Compaq Big Band, a 21-piece swing band. Admission is $15.
The Freemans are based in the Hudson Valley, N.Y. Mr. Freeman is a member and assistant director of the Big Apple Lindy Hoppers and winner of a silver medal at the Canadian Lindy Hop Championships.
Workshop fees are $25 for one class; $40 for two classes; or $50 for all three. Register for the workshops in advance at www.got2lindy.com or at the door.
