You could not go anywhere these last few months without someone asking, "How's Virginia doing?"

Virginia Hackney of Tisbury was a little embarrassed by all the attention she received last Sunday when more than 75 people filled her parents' home in Vineyard Haven to honor Virginia and support her as she battles an illness.

Virginia's parents, Sheldon and Lucy Hackney, wanted to thank the Island community for the outpouring of good wishes over the last few months. Some of the hundreds of get-well cards sent to Virginia were used to decorate the walls for the party. Mr. Hackney welcomed the guests and expressed gratitude to the Islanders who rallied around his daughter. It is a family tradition that a poem be written and read for special occasions, he said, and this certainly qualified. Mr. Hackney shared the first few stanzas of the poem he was writing for this day. Each stanza ended with Virginia's favorite quote, "Are you behaving?"

A delicious brunch was laid out on the dining room table. Guests mingled, enjoying the mid-day sun, and the warmth of a community brought together by an extraordinary woman, Virginia Hackney.
