Toys for Red Stocking

The Martha's Vineyard Harley Riders (MVHR) announce the drop-off box locations for this year's Red Stocking Fund toy drive. They are as follows: all branches of the M.V. Co-op bank, both Cronig's Markets, Shirley's Hardware, Woodland Variety and Grill, Alley's General Store, Conroy Apothecary, VFW, and PA Club. The toys will be picked up on Friday, Dec. 8, by the MVHR. New, unwrapped toys for all ages are greatly appreciated.

Giving thanks together

The Federated Church in Edgartown will host a Thanksgiving dinner on Thursday, Nov. 23 in the Parish House.

The dinner is for members of the congregation, people in the community, and their friends who will be without family over the holiday. Make a reservation by calling Mary-Jean Minor at the church, 508-627-4421.

Try to stop

If you are a smoker and trying to quit, take part in the American Cancer Society's Great American Smokeout today, Nov. 16. Since its start 30 years ago, the Smokeout has set the stage for a cultural revolution in tobacco control.

A recent report, published this October, from the American Cancer Society estimates a 40 percent reduction in lung cancer death rates among men between 1991 and 2003. An estimated 146,000 cancer deaths have been prevented. Keep this good record going.

For more information about the Smokeout, or for smoke-free legislation, call the American Cancer Society at 1-800-ACS-2345, or visit them online at www.cancer.org/smokeout.

Legal document lecture

Advance Directives are documents that you need to protect your assets and loved ones. They also allow you to voice your wishes pertaining to your health-care choices when you are incapacitated. Health-care proxies and living wills are examples of these documents that do not only pertain to the elderly, but people of all ages. This Saturday, Nov. 18, Art Kimber will give a lecture titled "Legal documents you need to have workshop." It will be held at the Grace Episcopal Church Parish Hall on Woodlawn Ave., Vineyard Haven, from 9 am to noon. All ages are welcome, and child-care can be arranged. There is a $5 fee for documents and materials. To register, call 508-693-0332.

An eight-week discussion group is beginning for any parent looking to talk with other parents about child development and other parenting issues. Hosted by Marney Toole, the group will first meet on Friday, Dec. 1, and will continue every Friday from 9:30 to 11 am in the Martha's Vineyard Community Services boardroom. The meetings will run through Jan. 26, and there will be no group on Dec. 29. Pre-registration is required. For more information or to register, call Jen or Amy at 508-693-7900 ext. 288.
