Tisbury

By Kay Mayhew - November 16, 2006

Have you appreciated our beautiful autumn? Warm sunny weather makes the brightly colored leaves really stand out. Of course, we won't be seeing much more warm weather now. The Bradford pear trees are beautiful as are all those red maples. The oak trees are losing their leaves a little early; the high winds tore them off our trees. But I never understand why those same high winds don't blow the leaves into our neighbors' yards. Instead, we get all of theirs.

I love to read. Giving a child the gift of books is the best gift I can think of. In books, children will find fuel to feed their imaginations. The week after Thanksgiving the Tisbury School Media Center will hold the Scholastic Book Fair to encourage reading. Mark your calendar. They will offer an extensive array of the most popular books and educational products available. This is one way the Tisbury School shows its dedication to helping children become lifelong readers.

This biannual event gives students, teachers, parents, and grandparents an opportunity to add to their own libraries. Everyone will have a chance to stock up for reading. The Media Center will open for the Book Fair on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, Nov. 27, 28, and 30, from 2:45 to 4 pm. On Wednesday, Nov. 29, the Fair stays open late, from 2:45 to 7 pm.

Everyone else is planning now for the holidays. Why should your dog be any different? Bring your dogs, cats, and the kids for pictures with Santa on Saturday, Dec. 2, from noon to 3 pm, at the MVSPCA. Enjoy refreshments, while they sit with Santa in his sleigh and have their photo taken. A $15 donation is suggested.

Here is a new idea: Jen Morgan is looking for alumni dogs to be in the holiday parade for Christmas in Edgartown. Alumni dogs are those who were adopted from the Vineyard shelter. All shapes, sizes, colors, and ages are welcome to celebrate adopted animals everywhere. Owners can show off their special friends, while proudly prancing them down Main Street, wearing their alumni bandanas. The parade is Saturday, Dec. 9, at 10 am. Call Jen at 508-627-8662, if you and your dog are interested.

Big bunches of birthday balloon wishes go out tomorrow to Island artist Nancy Furino. Our county treasurer Noreen Flanders celebrates on Saturday. Wish the best on Sunday to Tracy Matthiessen, Vineyard Playhouse producer MJ Munafo, and Marion Burke.

Heard on Main Street: "42.7 percent of all statistics are made up on the spot."
