The Preacher's Son

Preacher's son

Marc Adams, author of the award-winning book "The Preacher's Son," will speak on Sunday, Dec. 3, at 3 pm at the Grace Episcopal Church in Vineyard Haven.

PFLAG of Martha's Vineyard and the church will host Mr. Adams, a gay man, who will share his experiences growing up in a fundamental Baptist home.

Mr. Adams went through reparative therapy because his religion told him that being gay is not acceptable to God. His experience is a common one as he found out through doing outreach with youth at religious schools. Mr. Adams shares his story by speaking to groups around the country.

A wakening experience

There is still time to sign up for the meditation retreat to be held on Saturday, Dec. 2, at the Unitarian Universalist Chapel, located at 238 Main Street, Vineyard Haven. From 9 am to 4 pm, join Chas Di Capua, teacher in residence at the Insight Meditation Society in Barre for a day of meditation practice.

The introduction to "Vipassana," which means "clear-seeing," is a clear and simple presentation that leaves you with a much deeper understanding of the practice, according to Jo Rice, who has attended Mr. Di Capua's retreats before. His teachings also demonstrate how meditation "cools the fires" of greed, hatred, and delusion, Ms. Rice writes.

Winter at the Chilmark Library

Chilmark Library Director Ebba Hierta is correct by saying "There's not much to do up-Island in the off-season." To get through the winter, The Friends of the Chilmark library will start to host the ChilLib Off-season Café on Saturday mornings at 10:30 am and Thursday afternoons at 3:30 pm. Come in and gather with friends and neighbors for coffee, tea, cocoa, and pastries all winter long. The library offers wireless Internet in the meeting room and board games in addition to books and magazines. The new winter library hours are Monday, 10:30 to 5:30 pm; Tuesday, 10:30 to 1:30 pm; Wednesday, 10:30 to 7:30 pm; Thursday, 3:30 to 6:30; Saturday, 10:30 to 5:30.

A new worship

This December, join the Taize Community for three advent worships at the Chilmark Community Church. The Taize was started in the south of France in the 1940s, and is a style of worship that incorporates elements of Protestantism, Roman Catholicism, and Eastern Orthodoxy. It includes prayer, silence, and repeated song, and is simple and contemplative. People from all faith traditions are welcome. The worships will be on Sundays, Dec. 3, 10, and 17 at 5 pm.
