Oak Bluffs

By Megan Alley - December 7, 2006

For those of you who attended the Tree Lighting last week, wasn't it a great start for the Christmas season? There were so many members of the community, ranging from babies to senior citizens, gathered together to sing and greet one another while enjoying the lights. Take time to say thank you to all the town employees, friends, and volunteers who made our town look so beautiful.

The library programs are back in full swing again. The Pre-School Story Time is at 10:30 am on Wednesdays and the Age 6 to 10 Story Time is at 3:30 pm on Fridays. Family Games Nights continue at 6 pm on Thursdays. Come and play board games with your family and friends.

A weekly writers group will begin meeting at the Oak Bluffs Public Library on Thursday mornings from 10 am to noon starting on Jan.18, 2007. New and established writers are invited to bring their "works in progress" for review and positive input from the group. Please contact the library at 693-9433, if you are interested in attending.

Go down to the Senior Center on Tuesday mornings and have a delicious breakfast. They start at 8:30 am. A special treat after the breakfast on Dec. 12 will be an appearance by the Minnesingers at 9:45 am.

The All-Island B Band will be presenting their winter concert on Wed., Dec. 13, at the MVRHS Performing Arts Cent. The concert will start at 7:30 pm.

If you are interested or concerned about the school budget for next year, there will be a public hearing regarding it. The meeting will be Tuesday, Dec. 12, at 7 pm and will be held in the school library and is opened to the school community and the general public. Oak Bluffs was the only school on the Island to have an increase in students (25) this year and in addition is expecting reductions in federal funding for some of their programs next year.

Our Town lost two long-time citizens this week. We send condolences to the families and friends of Mary Drouin and George Wey.

We send birthday smiles to Estelle Surprenant and Brittney Jardin who celebrated Dec. 4, Lynn Rebello and Rose Cogliano today, Vamp Campbell on Dec. 8, Patrick Parker Joyce Alley and Tony Maseda on Dec. 10, and EMT Peter Tennant on Dec. 13.

Enjoy your week and send your news along to me remembering the deadline of Monday, noon.
