Celebrants gathered at the Martha's Vineyard Hebrew Center's first night of Chanukah last Friday, Dec. 15. People lit candles and enjoyed a holiday feast during the start of this year's Festival of Lights. Traditionally, the food is fried in oil to commemorate the holiday's history of the miraculous jar of oil that lasted for eight days. Latkes, or potato pancakes, remain the traditional favorite.
