Joyce M. Alley

Joyce Mary (Tucker) Alley died on Dec. 16 at the Martha's Vineyard Hospital. Joyce was born on Dec. 10, 1939 in Goffstown, New Hampshire, the daughter of George I. Tucker and Constance Maxwell.

The Tucker family resided in Goffstown and in Fitchburg before moving to Oak Bluffs in 1949.

Joyce graduated from the Oak Bluffs High School in 1957. In 1958 she married Lawrence H. Pachico and they were the parents of Lisa Robin Pachico.

In November 1965 Joyce married A. Forrest Alley, Jr., and moved to what was then Gay Head. During her years in Gay Head, she worked with the Manning family at their restaurant for several years. In 1967 she went to work for Dr. David Rappaport at his Oak Bluffs office where she was employed for the next 15 years. Joyce spent the next 20 years of her working career as a Sheriff's Department dispatcher for the County of Dukes County at the Communications Center.

She cared for generations of her family and enjoyed visits from her extended family members who often arrived at the Tucker home from New Hampshire. In turn, Joyce and her family would often visit with their extended family in New Hampshire.

Joyce is survived by her husband, A. Forrest Alley, Jr., of Aquinnah; her daughter, Lisa Cass of Oak Bluffs; her step-son, Alfred Alley III of Watertown; and granddaughters Jenna Gosson and Annie Cass, both of Oak Bluffs. She is also survived by her brothers, Phillip Tucker and his wife Josephine of Florida and George Tucker of Oak Bluffs; her sister, Susan Peters and her husband Earl V. of Oak Bluffs; as well as by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and their families.

A graveside service was held on Dec. 20 at Oak Grove Cemetery, Oak Bluffs.

In lieu of flowers, donations for pulmonary rehabilitation in memory of Joyce may be sent to the Martha's Vineyard Hospital-Development Office, P.O. Box 1477, Oak Bluffs, MA 02557.

Mary E. Morano

Mary E. "Mebbit" Morano of Edgartown died in Boston on December 18. She was the beloved wife of Charles A. Morano. Her funeral service will be held in the Federated Church, S. Summer Street, Edgartown on Friday, Dec. 22, 11 am. A visitation will be held for family and friends in the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home on Thursday, Dec. 21, from 6 to 8 pm. Esther B. Nichols

Esther Barbara Nichols, 82, died on Dec. 14 at her son's home with her loving family around her. She was born in Vineyard Haven and lived here until 1944. She was a payroll clerk for the City of New Bedford Police Department until her retirement.

She was the beloved widow of Arthur F. Nichols. She was the mother of Robert M. Nichols, of Dartmouth, David A. Nichols, of Raynham; grandmother of Melanie Montanez, Sherri, Ashley, Julia, and Emily Nichols; sister of Ida Machado and Virginia Oliveira, both of New Bedford, Antone and Manuel Lima of Martha's Vineyard; great grandmother of two; and survived by nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her son, Arthur F. Nichols, Jr.; and her parents, Manuel and Ida Lima.

Varnum R. Mead

Varnum Russell Mead, 86 years old, of Oak Bluffs, formerly of Lincoln, died peacefully on Dec. 18, after suffering a fall. Husband of Janice Harlow (Brett) Mead; father of Dorothy B. Pitt and her husband Christopher of Milton, and Susan R. Mead of Oak Bluffs; grandfather of Louisa, Philip, and Martha Pitt. Also survived by sister-in-law, Helen B. Thacher of Marion; niece Joan Tiffany of Boston; and nephews Geoffrey Patterson of Edgartown, Brett Thacher of Canton , N.Y., and Christopher Patterson of Newton.

A memorial service will be held at 11 am on Wednesday, Dec. 27, at the Federated Church, S. Summer Street, Edgartown.
