Winter dance

This year's Vineyard Dance Choreographer's Workshop performances begin Wednesday, Jan. 17 and run through Jan. 21, and will benefit the Nathan Mayhew Seminars. New dance works are choreographed and performed by artists such as Jilana Abrams, Clare Ives, Kanta Lipsky, and Michelle Pikor, among many others. Modern dance, ballet, jazz, mime, and improvisation will be on showcase.

Metropolitan Opera on Main Street

In partnership with the Metropolitan Opera House, Emerging Pictures brings several Metropolitan Operas to the Capawock Theater's high definition screen in Vineyard Haven. The operas were first distributed to a handful of theaters around the world through a live feed from the opera house. This second release is a taping of the live feed. Starting on Sunday, Jan. 14, "The Magic Flute," directed by Julie Taymor, will play at 2 and 4:15 pm. On Sunday, Jan. 21, enjoy "I Puritani," featuring the Russian soprano Anna Netrebko. To purchase tickets, visit the box office from 6:30 to 8 pm on weekdays, and until 9:30 pm on weekends. Tickets are $15 for seniors, children, students, and $18 for adults.

WWII GI's in Berga prison

"Berga: Soliders of Another War" plays at the Hebrew Center this Sunday, Jan 14 at 2 pm. The film, written, directed, and narrated by Charles Guggenheim, an internationally acclaimed documentary filmmaker who died in October 2002. The film tells the story of American GI prisoners who were sent to Berga, a satellite of the Buchenwald concentration camp, where they became enslaved and forced to labor under inhuman conditions. Mr. Guggenheim was passionate about this film because he lost a friend at Berga. A donation is suggested for admission.

Casting call for one-act plays

Island Theatre Workshop will hold auditions for five one-act plays on Saturday, Jan. 13, from 12 noon to 3:30 pm at the Katharine Cornell Theatre, Spring Street, Vineyard Haven.

The plays will have different directors and range in length from 10 to 30 minutes. Actors will be asked to read from the scripts. The plays will be performed in March. For more information, call Lee Fierro at 508-693-5290.

A room for the children

The Edgartown Library is celebrating the return of its children's section, closed ten months ago for a full renovation when mold was found behind the wallpaper. Join the community this Saturday, Jan. 13, from 2 to 4 pm to share refreshments and a chance to win a door prize. Visit the new room and look at the scale model of the proposed new library building.

The Year of the Pig

It's the year of the Pig 4704, and The Yard invites you to celebrate the Chinese New Year on Saturday, Feb. 10, at The Wharf in Edgartown. Hors d'oeuvres, a cash bar, and a silent auction begin the evening at 5 pm. A live auction will follow at 6 pm, followed by a traditional Chinese dinner. According to co-chair Wiet Bacheller, the event has sold out for the last two years, and she encourages people to get their tickets early. This year is the sixth annual Yard celebration, and features doctor and author Gerry Yukevich as auctioneer. The event benefits The Yard's programs in Island schools. Tickets ($35, $25 if purchased by Feb. 1) can be purchased at The Wharf, by calling The Yard at 508-645-9662, or through Wiet Bacheller at 508-693-0927. Cash and checks are accepted at the Wharf or through Wiet, and credit cards and checks are accepted at The Yard.

Children take the stage

Lee Fierro is about to begin Winter Children's Theatre classes on Monday, Jan. 22. The popular program includes all aspects of theatre and a final performance.
