Congratulations to Nancy Gardella and Richard Clark on their new grandson. USMC Corporals Christopher and Lilly Clark, now residing in Oceanside, Calif., had a baby boy, Dominic Leigh Clark, on Wednesday, Jan. 10. Dominic was born at the United States Navy hospital at Camp Pendleton. He weighed in at 7 pounds, 12 ounces and was happily welcomed by his two-year-old brother Corbyn.

Chris Clark is a 2003 graduate of the Martha's Vineyard Regional High School. On Island the baby's great grandparents are Dick and Lorraine Clark and his great great-grandparents are Elisha and Denise Smith. Dominic was also welcomed by his great grandmother Iole Gardella of White Plains, N.Y., and great great-grandma Beatrice Beaucaire of Bristol, Conn. Dominic's maternal grandparents are Rey and Pat Garza of Rockford, Ill. The family will bring Dominic for his first visit to the Island in July.

Best wishes for a rapid recovery go to Dr. Gretchen Jacobs. She is recovering from a nasty fall on icy steps a week ago following the NAACP dinner. She was seriously battered and badly bruised, but we are glad to hear that she feels a little better every day.

Art Buchwald again has left us all smiling, just as he always did. A few years ago, Buchwald even found a way to joke about his last farewell. He told Phil Donahue, "I am going to be cremated and have my ashes spread all over every cocktail party on Martha's Vineyard."

If your New Year's resolution is to get fit and lose weight, the Mansion House is offering a free first visit to introduce you to an eight-week motivational weight loss program. Most of us know what to do, we just don't do it. The program runs through early March.

Winter came this week, complete with snowflakes. In the area north of Orlando, it was warm and sunny with temperatures in the 70s. The Times web site, www.mvtimes.com, keeps everyone connected even while off Island. After a pleasant few days away with friends, I am home now and waiting to hear the news you want to share.

Big bunches of birthday balloon wishes go out to Elisha Smith next Tuesday, as he also celebrates the birth of his latest great great-grandson. Happy birthday on Saturday to Caroline Davey. Monday is a special day for town accountant Suzanne Kennedy. Susie Thurber parties on Wednesday.

Best wishes for a very happy anniversary go out next Wednesday to Aase and Harry Jones.

Heard on Main Street: "If old acquaintance be forgot, give him a call and remember."
