Chili festival 2007
Chili professionals and amateurs stood behind their pots this past Saturday at the Portuguese American Club (PA), hoping to impress the taste buds of more than 1,100 attendees and prove that their slop was tops.
Music: A lot of Ballyhoo
Martha's Vineyard may be hundreds of miles from native bluegrass soil, but local band Ballyhoo is doing its darnedest to channel its essence from the hollows and hills of Appalachia.
Theater: Written, produced, and starring...
This weekend, the Vineyard Playhouse and the Tisbury School present two original short plays created by the fourth grade classes of Ms. Van de Geer and Ms. Herman.
Dance: Crazy spin
Who better to write a spoof on the classic "Nutcracker" ballet then ballerina Lori Cunningham? As the Sugar Plum Fairy, Ms. Cunningham has delighted Island audiences in the annual "Nutcracker Gala." Now with her own dance company, Martha's Vineyard Dance Theatre, she has written a hilarious take on Tchaikovsky's ballet, and titled it "Crazy Cracker."
Everyone's a winner at the Big Chili Contest
"I think it was one of the best we ever had," said WMVY general manager Greg Orcutt Monday about last weekend's Big Chili Contest. "I can't remember a year when it went this smoothly. The PA club was a wonderful place to have it. They were terrific!"
The pipes are calling
Tartans made of good Scottish wool were perfect cold-weather wear last Saturday night, although some of the men dressed in kilts might have found them a bit breezy on the way into the Harbor View Hotel, site of The 20th annual Burns Nicht Supper.

A view from the bricks
The Trustees of the Reservations (TTOR) annual hike to the site of the old brickyard in Chilmark really is a walk back in time. Sarah Trudel, education and interpretation coordinator at TTOR, organized this year's walk.
Visiting Veterinarian: Hold the spices, please
An Island veterinarian recently stopped into a local establishment for a caffeine fix. Along with the yummy baked goods for people, the shop sells homemade dog treats and the doctor in question purchased one for her own pup. During the transaction, a conversation ensued. The baker happily listed the tasty stuff that went into these delectable dog biscuits.
Birds: Winter hazards
The month of January started out gently but ended with a fierce blast of what New England winters have traditionally been about. The long and bitter blast of Arctic air that enveloped much of the center and eastern half of the country, bringing the coldest temperatures in a couple of years made life difficult for all wild plants and animals.
Raven finds home on campus
Ben Cabot of West Tisbury visited Washington, D.C. on Jan. 19 for the unveiling of his Black Granite Raven Post on George Washington University's campus.
Students step up for Darfur
The Performing Arts Center at Martha's Vineyard Regional High School was packed with students for last Wednesday's assembly on the genocide in the Darfur region of Sudan.
For the birds, and for science too
My eyes were finally opened to the bird world when a friend came to dinner last summer and we took an evening walk to the beach. She is an avid birder and shares what she knows easily. By listening, she knew there were juvenile chickadees nearby, which had just been nudged from their nests.
Garden Notes: Winter's prognosticator
Weather justice was recently meted out to all who complained about the absence of real winter. I still hope Groundhog Day brings a wintry, fully moonlit sky, beneath which lies a beautiful snow cover on the ground below. It may have been shortened, but it is all the winter we've got, it is here, and there is some cold.
