Capt. Ron J. MacLaren, of Oak Bluffs, was selected as Commanding Officer of a United States Navy Reserve Expeditionary Battalion at a ceremony on Jan. 20 in West Hartford, Conn.
Angela Madeiras was awarded her master's degree at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, by the Plant and Soil Science Department. Angela is the daughter of Don and Bertie Madeiras of Oak Bluffs and a 1986 graduate of MVRHS.
David Bouck, of West Tisbury, attended a culture and community service program in Mexico in January. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Lynn Bouck of West Tisbury, David is a sophomore majoring in environmental studies.
Stephen Gallas, of Tisbury, has been certified as a Firefighter I/II by the Massachusetts Fire Training Council this past January. Steve is a volunteer firefighter in Chilmark and Tisbury.
Anya Toteanu is spending the spring semester in China studying at the Capital University of Economics and Business in Beijing. Anya is the daughter of John Toteanu of West Tisbury, and Sandra Fisher of Vineyard Haven. She is majoring in East Asian studies and economics at Colby College in Waterville, Maine.
Jordan Baptiste, of Tisbury, was awarded the U.S. Coast Guard's Commandant's Letter of Commendation Ribbon Bar. He was honored for his help in rescuing a crew of six as their fishing vessel capsized.
Thomas Stackpole, of West Tisbury, is studying at Al Akhawayn University in Ifrane, Morocco this semester. Thomas is the son of Matthew and Martha Stackpole of West Tisbury, and is a junior majoring in political science at Bates College, Lewiston, Maine.
Emily Franklin, of Tisbury, participated in Hartwick College's January term off-campus program, "Business Dynamics in New Zealand." Emily is the daughter of Penny and Gavin Franklin, and is majoring in management.
Forrest Eagle D'Olympia, of West Tisbury, was awarded a $2,000 scholarship towards the first year's tuition at Falmouth Academy in Falmouth. Forrest was one of the top three scorers in the academy's scholarship exam.
Lauren Townes, of Edgartown, has been accepted at the Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff. She will attend in the fall and will major in anthropology and criminal justice.
Wellington Oliveira and Lucas Vieira do Carmo, received their M.V. Regional High School diplomas in January after returning last fall to pass the MCAS exam. They are the first two students to return after receiving a Certificate of Attainment to earn their diploma.
