This past Sunday evening, Islanders gathered at the Mansion House in Vineyard Haven to gaze at the stars - movie stars, that is - during the 79th Academy Awards presentation.

The night began with a walk up the red carpet and past the Plum TV paparazzi that were interviewing the attendees as they walked in.

An elegant display of snacks and spirits kept the crowd, which peaked at around 70 people, satiated while they watched the show on the big screen television.

"We made a small surplus, but we did have great donations," said Richard Paradise, executive director of the Martha's Vineyard Film Society, which hosted and benefited from the event. "Boisset donated the champagne, Offshore Ale donated the beer. We paid for food, and the Mansion house donated the room. We couldn't ask for a better teammate than the Mansion House staff."

Cindy Smith of Edgartown won the night's Oscar pool. She had seven out of eight correct answers, only missing best foreign picture. The Center for Therapeutic Massage in Vineyard Haven donated a massage for the winner of the pool, in which contestants predicted the winners of several Oscars before the evening got under way.
