As we enter Lent, the Rev. Mary Jane O'Connor- Ropp reminds us in the church newsletter, The Flame, that the root system of the ministry is prayer, and she hopes we will use the Lenten season to deepen our personal prayer life.

Rehearsals for Palm/Passion Sunday cantata will be at the Chilmark Community Church on Sundays from 6 to 7 pm on March 11, 18, and 25.

And prayers and best wishes to Carol Merry who was injured in an automobile crash last week. An e-mail from Bonnie George tells us that Carol is "expected to have a good recuperation but there are many broken bones to deal with." Carol is at Massachusetts General Hospital, 55 Fruit St., Boston, MA 02114.

And prayers and sympathy to Cynthia Riggs on the loss of her daughter, Mary, who died last week of a heart attack in Ohio, where she lived.

Gloria Burkin telephoned to report the death of her 94-year-old father, Leon Poock, in Boston. She asks that anyone wishing to make donations do so to the Martha's Vineyard Cancer Support Group, P.O. Box 2214, Vineyard Haven, MA 02568.

The Martha's Vineyard Independent Film Festival is back for its seventh annual film series at the community center on March 16 to 18. Food and music to go with the films. Passes are available at Island Entertainment. For more information, visit www.mviff.org.
