We hope we are about done with the April showers and are really looking forward to those May flowers. It was hard to tell if all those happy smiles over the weekend were the result of the long awaited beautiful sunshine or the result of the Red Sox playing baseball the way the game ought to be played.

This weekend's best buy on the Island is the $10 dinner on Saturday night. The ladies of the American Legion Post 257 Auxiliary will host a chicken dinner with "all the fixings" at the Legion hall on Martin Road on Saturday from 5 to 7 pm. Tickets at the door are $10 for adults and $5 for children under 12. Eat-in or take-out. For orders call the Legion hall, 508-693-9257.

Tim and Cindy Corner, along with their children, Holly and Clinton Griesser, just returned from a cruise to the Western Caribbean. Holly had flown to Boston from her home in San Francisco to join the rest of the family. Cindy says it was very nice to have all the family together. They especially enjoyed the warm weather, Dunns Falls in Jamaica, and the beaches in Haiti and Cozumel. Then they came home. Unfortunately, they returned in the middle of the nor'easter.

All funds raised for the Martha's Vineyard Cancer Support Group stay on-Island to help Island residents. You are invited to An Evening Under the Stars on Thursday, May 17. This will be a gala celebration at Mediterranean to benefit the support group. Tickets are $100 each. Call 508-693-8296 for more information. Send your check for a ticket or just a donation to PO Box 2214 to help make sure that "no one with cancer needs to be alone."

Congratulations to Kate Dowling. She was named employee of the year by the Home for Little Wanderers. She was chosen from more than 700 employees. She is the daughter of Jeanne and Douglas Dowling. A graduate of the Regional High School, Kate worked as a counselor at the Boys and Girls Club of Martha's Vineyard. She also was the director of the summer camp. Kate now lives in Brookline. She is a special education teacher at Knight Children's Center, a program of the Home for Little Wanderers.

Buy your weekend baked goods from the volunteers of the nonprofit Second Chance Animal Rescue. They will hold a bake sale at Cronig's on Saturday from 10 to 3. All the proceeds go to help the animals. These pets are deemed unadoptable for various reasons. This group gives the animals a second chance at a loving home.

Beatrix Potter's popular storybook character Peter Rabbit will visit the Vineyard Haven Library on Tuesday at 10 am and again at 11 am. All ages are welcome both times. Be sure to bring him a carrot, or was it cabbages that Peter was so fond of?

Big bunches of birthday balloon wishes go out on Saturday to Melanie Jane Dickson. Virginia Hackney and John McCarthy will party on Sunday. Wish the best on Monday to Doug Hewson. He is probably resting up before preparing fine meals to serve you at Mediterranean. Also celebrating on Monday is Andrew Williamson, whose twin sister, Ellie Williamson, will have her birthday on Tuesday.

Heard on Main Street: It may be that your sole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to others.
