I was shocked and very sorry to learn of the passing of Phil Craig. I knew him only slightly, but it was obvious he was kind, gentle, and funny. We send deepest sympathy to his family. Devoted fans of his mysteries are saddened too. As one of them, who never met him but has all of his books, wrote " I felt as though I knew him. And I was looking forward to getting his latest books for years to come." He was a gifted writer, and J. J. Jackson and Zee, not to mention all those bluefish paté recipes, will live on.

Library happenings dominate the news these days, beginning with the new summer schedule of increased hours starting June 4. Tuesday hours will be 10:30 am to 5:30 pm, and for the first time the library will be open on Fridays, from 10:30 am to 1:30 pm.

Something else new at the library is the online version of Consumer Reports, as well as the magazine. The online subscription at www.consumerreports.org. can be accessed from the library or at home with User Name chilmarklibrary Password chilmarklibrary.

Helped immeasurably by an enthusiastic group of Friends of the Library who are generous with their time and their funds - Sharon Ebber, Marcie Slater, Carol Merry, Rhoda Diamond, Becky Kaplan and charter member Bill Gamson, among others - the library staff has planned a full array of programs and projects for the months ahead.

Among events they sponsor will be the demonstration of Caribbean delicacies by Deon Thomas, chef at the Cornerway restaurant, next Wednesday, May 30, at 5:30 pm. Mr. Thomas has just returned from Anguila where he has another restaurant, The Overlook. Next Thursday, May 31, Stephen and Susan McGhee will give a chamber music concert at 5 pm at the library. Everyone is welcome to attend both events; admission is free.

The Friends book sale with extraordinary bargains is underway, so stop in and browse the sale tables.

Organizers of the Memorial Day picnic at the Tashmoo Waterworks want all of us to be aware that, for the second year, this is an all-Island event and we are all invited to attend. It will be held on Monday, May 28, from 12 noon to 4 pm. There will be free pony rides, rowing games, ice cream. The Flying Elbows and Tristan Israel will provide live music. The rain date is June 3.

Have a great Memorial Day weekend.
