We have just returned from a two-day sojourn in Boston's heat (87 degrees) and noise (intermittent wailing of sirens throughout the day and night) to the cool and quiet of the Island. It was disconcerting, however, to discover that I was face to face with an early deadline for the column. So I'm writing this off the cuff, so to speak, on Friday the 25th without much accumulation of news. Here is what I know:
Former library director Cathy Thompson was in town for a brief Memorial Day visit from Lake Bluff, Ill., where she is the director of the large and flourishing library. She has made many new friends and reports that Denzel, her majestic coon cat, and his companion, Lady, have adjusted nicely to their new surroundings.
The deadline for submissions to the library's comic strip contest is Saturday, June 2. Call the library for contest rules. There are cash prizes, and Paul Karasik will judge the entries. Winners will be announced on June 6.
Linda Thompson will show new landscapes and Marianne Neill will show gouaches of garden flowers and sheep in a two-person exhibition at the library for the first two weeks in June. There will be a reception on Saturday, June 2, from 3 to 5 pm, to which everyone is invited.
There are two new additions to the library staff for the summer. Annie Umphrey of Presque Isle, Maine, started May 21st, and Saray Dugas from Deerfield will start next Monday, June 4. Both young ladies are recent college graduates and plan to live in Chilmark this summer.
The Island Committee on Hunger is holding a bake sale of breads, rolls, muffins, and cakes under the linden tree on Main Street in Vineyard Haven on Saturday, June 2 from 12 noon to 2 pm. Bakers are asked to drop off their contributions at 8:30 am. Any questions, please call Elaine Eugster at 508-693-7614.
The Martha's Vineyard Chamber Music Society board has voted to offer special subscription rates for its summer concert series at the Old Whaling Church and the Chilmark Community Center to year-round residents. For information, please call Kathy Retmier at 508-696-8055.
