Was the weather this past weekend so perfect and unexpected? The sun managed to shine down most of the time, and the predicted rain held off. Many visitors arrived and once again the crowds and traffic descended on us before we had a chance to realize summer is really almost here.

Memorial Day remembrances took place in many forms over this past holiday weekend. The entire staff and student body of the Oak Bluffs School took part in a remembrance and recognition of Memorial Day on Friday morning. Students preformed songs, recited poems, and read passages reflecting our country's respect and homage to our brave veterans. Several local veterans were on hand, including staff members Ray Frazio and Brian Weiland as well as special guests, courtesy of the American Legion Post 257. They included retired United States Army tech. sgt. Art Dixon, E5 sgt. Maine Corps Greg Spain, master sgt. United States Air Force David Kahn, Sgt. United States Army Joanne Murphy and retired United States Army Sgt. (Mountain Ski Troops) Mev Good. They all spoke on their experiences in the armed services.

The Memorial Day parade and services on Monday in Vineyard Haven were attended by many citizens who came to show their respects for all Veterans. Flags were flown and it was so heart-warming to see and hear so many participants and also observers.

Ten-year-old Jeremy Alley-Tarter came in first in the Hospice one-mile fun race for ages 12 and under, on Sunday. His time was five minutes and 58 seconds.

We send birthday smiles to Hilde Combra on June 1 and her husband Bert on June 4. June 9 will be Ernestine Kinnecom's special day and Meaghan Jeffers is June 9. Anniversary wishes to Ernestine and husband Bob on June 7 and Will and Susan deBettencourt on June 10. And can you believe that the Peters triplets: Timothy, Jacob and Julia, will be turning 8 on June 5. Their parents Paula and Tim will be celebrating their 20th wedding anniversary on June 6.

Susan and John Goddard and their family were here for a few days getting their summer cottage on Vineyard Ave. prepared for summer visits.

Coming from South Yarmouth for the day on Thursday was Linda Fisher. While here Linda spent some time visiting her aunt Elizabeth Alley.

Please note that there is a correction to the time of the Community goodbye's for Liz Cornell. The correct information is that they will take place on Friday, June 15, at 8:30 am at the Oak Bluffs School gym during the school's weekly community meeting.

The YMCA of Martha's Vineyard in cooperation with the Martha's Vineyard Public School System will present Literacy Night for families of English language learning (ELL) students and any interested families with students in grades K-3. It will be held at the Oak Bluffs School Library on June 5 from 5:30 until 7 pm.

Thursday, June 7, at the Oak Bluffs Library at 6:30 pm, Island resident Michael Wooley will be showing his recent underwater photographs taken on a scuba driving trip to the second largest barrier reef in the world, off the coast of Belize. Come and enjoy his photographs and commentary.

Joe Cogliano graduated from the Tilton School two weeks ago. His mother Rose and sister Marguerite and other relatives were there to observe the ceremony. Joe was the recipient of the William A. Harrison Ulfelder award, based on sportsmanship, congeniality and concern directed to his classmates and academic achievement. Congratulations Joe.

Let me know of your holiday weekend visitors and activities and other news. Enjoy your week.

Peace.
