A gallery gala

Amble through the Oak Bluffs Arts District on Saturday, July 7, from 4 to 7 pm, during the gallery stroll, which partially benefits Island Affordable Housing Fund to help save the Bradley Memorial Church.

Seven galleries and studios will be open, showing off paintings, clothes, photography, fabric, and jewelry. Find Catherine Walthers's new cookbook "Raising the Salad Bar," at the Alison Shaw Gallery, as well as Ms. Shaw's photographs and books. At PIK-NIK, there are new paintings by Max Decker, and see a group pastel show at Periwinkle Studio. The Red Mannequin features Swedish designer Marrika Nakk, and Island Interiors will be open from 5 to 7 pm with fabric and rug presentations from the Boston Design Center. Dragonfly Gallery presents two Island artists, Peggy Turner Zablotny and Elizabeth Lockhart Taft, and Lucinda Sheldon offers her handcrafted jewelry at her studio.

Reuniting for song

For her first time on the Island in five years, Kristine Stott and Steve Scotti will perform on stage in a one-hour "Summer Cabaret." Ms. Stott is a mezzo-soprano, and Mr. Scotti a composer, and their show is a presentation of songs from their CD "May I Feel," just released from Swansong Records. All proceeds will go to the Vineyard Playhouse.

"Summer Cabaret," 7 pm, Thursday, July 12, Katharine Cornell Theatre, Spring St., Vineyard Haven. $10. 508-696-8833.

Who's the hunkiest?

Carpenters, builders, electricians, plumbers, and handypersons: get your tool belts and hammers ready for Outerland's second annual Hunky Carpenter Contest, scheduled Thursday, July 12. Open to both male and females, the title for the 2007 Island's Hunkiest Carpenter is up for grabs. The contest's sponsor, H.N. Hinckley and Sons, will award over $1,000 in cash and prizes to the contestants who successfully woo the panel of female judges. Crowd enthusiasm and applause plays a part, too. Admission is free for competitors, and the judging begins at 7:30 pm. You can register by calling 508-693-1137, or at www.outerlandmv.com.

Hop to it

Dancers wanted! Can you Lindy Hop? Would you like to be part of a group number in this year's Built on Stilts Dance Festival? The Martha's Vineyard Dance group, the folks that keep ballroom dancing alive on the Island, are putting together a Lindy Hop number for the August festival. Lindy experience would be helpful but is not necessary. A partner isn't required.

Meet the playwrights

In a surprising and welcome addition, the Vineyard Playhouse announces a special talk-back evening with Catherine Rush and Adrian Blue, playwrights of "This Island Alone," July 6, after the show, at approximately 10 pm. It will be a wonderful opportunity for those who have seen this world premiere show to meet and hear from the two playwrights. Mr. Blue also directed the show. "This Island Alone" has come full circle from its beginnings as script-in-hand performances to this final version. Find out about the play and its journey to closing night (the final performance will be Saturday, July 7).
