From crayons to poetry
Peggy Freydberg of Chilmark will present her poetry during the Unitarian Universalist Society of Martha's Vineyard's 11 am service this Sunday. Among other poetry from "Evening on the Pond," and "Wanting," she will read "Ceasing to live a drama in order to see one." Mrs. Freydberg has been a writer for a long time. "I have written all my life, ever since I could hold a crayon," the 99-year-old says. The U.U. Society is located on Main Street in Vineyard Haven. For more information, call 508-693-3553.
ART for Education
To counteract recent state cuts in early education funding, the Garden Gate Child Development presents ART for Education, a cocktail party and silent auction to benefit the Garden Gates Artists program. The program brings professional artists into the classroom to teach students drama, painting, dance, sculpture, and storytelling, along with relationship development.
The event is held at the Grange Hall in West Tisbury on Tuesday, July 17. From 6 to 8:30 pm, hear live music from Squash Meadow, enjoy hors d'oeuvres made by Truly Scrumptious, view children's art work and bid on items from restaurant and shopping gift certificates to Red Sox tickets, Island getaways, aerial tours, and private sails. Tickets are $25 at the door. For more information, call 508-696-9997.

She begins a series of eight classes on August 2, from 10 am to 12 noon, at The Sacred Circle of Yoga Studio. The series will be held every Thursday for eight weeks, and includes a full-day, silent retreat on Sunday, August 26 from 9 am to 4 pm. The cost is $218, and scholarships are available. Wanted: A church
Members of the Apostolic House of Prayer of Pequot Avenue in Oak Bluffs have recently been left churchless after the sale of their church. Luckily, the Oak Bluffs Park Department granted them the use of Waban Park every Sunday, but the community is still in need of a church for rainy days and during the winter. Their Sunday service is held at 10 am across from the Inkwell Beach. If anyone has any ideas or can help attain a new church, or would like to be a musician during a service, call James Hester at 646-267-8600, or visit the Sunday service.
