Lose carbon "pounds"

This Wednesday is the first of a series titled "The Low Carbon Diet Workshop" at the Vineyard Haven library. The 30-day program - designed to help save money, energy, and the planet - will be led by Nan Doty, who has taken a training course by David Gershon, author of "The Low Carbon Diet: A 30 Day Program to Lose 5000 Pounds." In the workshop, one will learn to calculate one's own CO2 footprint, and create an individualized action plan to reduce it. Workbooks are available for sale or for loan at the front desk. The workshops are at 7 pm every Wednesday from Sept. 5 to September 26. For more information, call the library at 508-696-4211 ext. 16, or visit

Island Plan concludes

The last of the Island Plan forums is this Wednesday, Sept. 5, and it will deal with the Vineyard's economy. Questions for concern include: "How can we build a more local economy with more Island production, buying, investment, ownership, and hiring?" and "How can we ensure that needed goods and services for residents and visitors are available and affordable?" The forum will be held at 7:30 pm at the Harbor View Hotel in Edgartown. A discussion paper summarizing the group's preliminary conclusions is available at all town libraries, at, or from the M.V. Commission at 508-693-3453.

Author's reading in Chilmark
