Newest from the brightest this weekend

Posted September 13, 2007

After a month-long residency at the Yard in Chilmark, four choreographers will show their new work beginning tonight and continuing through Saturday. The modern dance concerts will be an opportunity for Island audiences to see the newest work from emerging choreographers.

Each year the Yard selects choreographers from a highly competitive pool of applicants from around the world for the Bessie Schonberg Choreographers' Residency. The residency includes housing, stipends, rehearsal space, and artistic guidance. The four choreographers then select a company of dancers at an intensive audition in New York City. For the past month, these dancers and choreographers have explored, experimented, shared ideas, and journeyed to this final performance weekend.

This year's concert will showcase new works by Sidra Bell, Janice Lancaster, Stefanie Nelson, and Sarah Young. The residency has been mentored by Yard associate artistic director Sandra Stone and the choreographers have received feedback from Lucinda Childs, Yard advisory board member; Martha Myers, Dean Emerita of the America Dance Festival; and Wendy Taucher, Yard artistic director.

Ms. Bell said she feels "...fortunate to have had the time and space to work at a slower pace with incredible dancers in a place with spectacular surroundings." The Yard was founded in 1973 by Patricia N. Nanon and has been recognized nationally and internationally for excellence in dance. Aside from supporting the creation of new works, the Yard also brings dance into the classroom through its artists-in-the-schools program.
