I am still waiting for that promised nor'easter, especially as I view the clumps of dried-up foliage that were once beautiful green ferns. The grass has spots of brown and is only kept somewhat green by diligent watering. And not even a bud is showing on the fall mums that usually are in bloom by the middle of September. Let's see what the end of this week brings.

A reminder that The Friday Conversations program tomorrow will have as their guest Mev Good who will relate his experiences as a teen-age member of the tenth Mountain Division of the United States Army during WWII.

We send birthday smiles to Ryan Araujo who turned one on Sept. 10, my daughter Mary Alley who parties today, Florence BenDavid on Sept. 15. and Patti Moreis and Kathy Burton on Sept. 17.

Annabelle Metell, the daughter of Allyson and Chad Metell, celebrates her first birthday on Sept. 16. Her grandparents are David and Marguerite Cook of Oak Bluffs and Ken and Linda Metell of Edgartown. Both of her parents, as well as Annabelle herself, are Island natives.

Check out our library at 7 pm tonight for author Jessica Harris's readings and reminiscences about topics from her latest book "The Martha's Vineyard Table." You may call the library for more info at 508-693-9433.

Donna Louis Barry and Richard Allen Silvia of East Falmouth were married on June 16 at the Navigator Portuguese American Club in East Falmouth. The bride is the daughter of the late Donald Anderson of Edgartown and the late Gladys Anderson of Oak Bluffs. The groom is the son of Elton and Marion Nottage Somerset.

A reminder about children's events at our library. The age six to 10 Story Time is on hiatus until Friday, Sept. 28. Then it will start up again from 3:30 to 4:30 pm until the end of May. There will be reading for the first half hour and then crafts created from the reading themes for the second half hour. You must attend the reading to do the crafts. Saturday, Sept. 15, will be Tomie DePaola Story Time. To celebrate this author/illustrator's birthday, many of his books will be read and then everyone will do artwork like he does. The session will end with cookies and milk since it is a bit too early for cake.

Enjoy your week and send your news along.
