The Hobbit

For Tolkien fans

The Edgartown library is celebrating the birthdays of literary characters Bilbo and Frodo of author J.R.R. Tolkien, most known for his Hobbit and Lord of the Rings books. Children from grade 7 and up are invited on Saturday, Sept. 22, from 7 to 9 pm for a costume contest, indoor scavenger hunt, trivia games, tales, food, and more. Live poetry

Michael West and Linda Black are hosting what may be Outerland's last Live Poetry show of the year tonight, Sept. 20. Donald Nitchie, Jill Jupen, and Clark Myers will read their work, and there will be an open reading segment following. Mr. Nitchie will read from his most recent book of poems, "Driving Lessons." The work of Ms. Jupen and Mr. Myers can be found in "Martha's Vineyard Writing" and "Vineyard Poets," among other journals. "Cages" at the Capawock

This month's Undiscovered Gem at the Capawock Theatre in Vineyard Haven is "Cages," a film shown at several international film festivals. The movie focuses on Eve and Damien, two characters passionately in love, which is wrecked by an accident. Communication begins to falter between the two that leads Eve to take serious action to prove her love to Damien. The film is at 7:30 pm on Monday, Sept. 24. Admission is $8; $6 for seniors and children.

After-school drama

IMP Improv for Kids offers after-school classes for children in grades 2 through 12. In addition to teaching improv, story theater, and acting skills, advanced students have the opportunity to join the teen improv troupe IMP, who performed at the Chicago Improv Festival this past spring. Sessions are broken up into fall, winter, and spring and will be held at the Oak Bluffs and Edgartown Schools. The grade groups are divided into 2-5 and 6-8. Comedy at O

This Saturday night's comedy show at Outerland stars Frank Santorelli of HBO's series "The Sopranos," Boston-based comedian Jim McCue, and Islander Marty Nadler. While Mr. Santorelli plays Georgie the bartender on television, he has headlined at many comedy clubs in New York, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and Boston. In recent years, Mr. McCue has traveled to Iraq to perform for the U.S. troops, and is the author of "Embedded Comedian." The two will join Marty Nadler on stage during an all-you-can-eat Italian buffet, which is from 7 to 10 pm. The show begins at 9 pm. For more information, call 508-693-1137, or visit
