Island artist Kara Taylor has assembled a diverse collection of art by ten different artists for her second annual invitational group show entitled Artists you should know-phase II.
"I want people to be able to see art that they might not see here on Island - edgier art with an impact," she said, describing her show. "About half of the artists are from off-Island. We included some functional pieces that I think are also art," she said pointing out the woven pieces by Islander Pia Post.
Remembering seeing his driftwood sculpture years ago, Ms. Taylor asked Island film-maker Jeremy Mayhew if he would be willing to create a couple of pieces for this show. His wall hangings are montages of found elements. The things we avoid while walking on the beach. Sculpture, painting, photography, textile, printmaking and mixed media can be seen at the exhibit.
The show's opening Saturday evening was overflowing with friends and families of the artists, along with various and sundry patrons of the arts. The food was good and the drinks flowed freely.
Ms. Taylor has devoted her entire gallery to the show. Small snatches of her own work could only be seen in the back room where the beverages were being poured opening night. It is a wide ranging exhibit, certain to bring pleasure to your holiday shopping while in town, and it could suggest answers to your shopping needs.
The Kara Taylor Fine Art gallery is located on Main Street in Vineyard Haven. The show runs through February 15. Gallery hours are Thursday through Sunday from 11 am to 5 pm. For more information, call 508-693-7799.
