GED prep
Beginning on Jan. 29, the Martha's Vineyard Public Schools will offer a GED preparation course. The course runs through May 22 and will be held twice weekly, on Tuesdays and Thursdays. New women's support group
Women's Support Services of Martha's Vineyard Community Services announces a new women's group to start this January. The eight-week support group will focus on recognizing and changing patterns that inhibit women so they can become more assertive and productive. Registration is required; call 508-693-7900 ext. 219.
Surplus food distribution
This Friday, Jan. 11, the Surplus Food Program will hold the January food distribution at the First Baptist Church parish House at 2 pm. Participants must meet the USDA income guidelines or be on one of the following programs: Food stamps, AFDC, WIC, Welfare, Medicaid, SSI, Head Start, Fuel Assistance, Family Day Care, or Veterans Aid. A minister says good-bye
On Jan. 6, members of her congregation, other Island clergy, and friends said good-bye to the Rev. Judy Campbell of the Unitarian-Universalist Society in Vineyard Haven with a special service and celebration. Look for a full story about the Rev. Adult study group
The Rev. Vicky Hanjian has resumed the Adult Study Group at the Chilmark Community Church Fellowship Hall every Sunday at 9:45 am. Currently, the group is reading "The Company of Strangers: Christians and the Renewal of America's Public Life" by Parker J. Palmer. Discussion topics include: "Political Power," "The Nature of Public Life," and "Conflict, Compassion, and the Way of the Cross." If interested, call the Rev. Potluck party
This Sunday, Jan. 13, the Martha's Vineyard Cancer Support Group is having a potluck party to celebrate survival and support. The event, free of charge, is an opportunity to socialize and perhaps share a story of survival or support. History sails a flyin'
Sail Martha's Vineyard will host a fireside dinner and slide presentation on Wednesday, Jan. 16, at 6 pm at the Black Dog Tavern in Vineyard Haven. Capt. Peter Arenstam of Plimoth Plantation will present the history of the Mayflower II, the ship built in England in 1957 that crossed the Atlantic in 55 days. Capt. Arenstam is the manager of the Maritime Artisans at the plantation.
