For one night only, Troubled Shores, Inc. presents a two-act PG-13 comedy performance by the professional teen improvisational troupe, IMPers, and the sketch troupe Sketchy Teens. IMPers take suggestions from the audience to inspire their one-act, half-hour comedic play. The Island actors in Sketchy Teens perform their original skits, focusing on colorful characters and unusual situations. The laughs start at 8 pm on Friday, Jan. 25, at the Katharine Cornell Theatre in Vineyard Haven. Tickets are $10 at the door, $5 in advance. Call 508-939-9368.
A National Geographic documentary, filmed in the early 1960s, tells of the bravery and hardships of Portuguese fisherman who went to sea for as long as six months at a time as they fished for cod in the Grand Banks. Sponsored by Friends of the Chilmark Public Library, the 16 millimeter film, "The Lonely Dorymen, Portugal's Men of the Sea," features a fishing schooner caught in a storm in the Atlantic. The film, just under an hour, will be shown on Wednesday, Jan. 30, at 6:30 at the Chilmark Public Library. Free popcorn and drinks. Admission is free, and all are welcome. Call 508-645-3360.
Make your own music
GarageBand, the user-friendly Mac program, allows you to make music even if you don't play an instrument or even read music. MVTV station manager Stephen Warriner will teach you all you need to know at a free workshop on Wednesday, Jan. 30, at 3 pm.
Mr. Warriner says that no musical knowledge is necessary. The program uses a series of pre-recorded loops, special effects, and rhythms. Sounds intriguing. To register for the free class, call 508-696-9760.
