Sad news from former library director Cathy Thompson. Her father, Irwin J. Askow died last Saturday at Evanston Hospital, following surgery. Mr. Askow was a Menemsha summer resident for more than half a century and will be fondly remembered by all who knew him. He loved the sunsets, Windy Gates beach and all things up-Island. We send our sympathies to Cathy and her brother Dan.
Crossword puzzle addicts take note: You can exercise your crossword skills and also your proficiency in the latest puzzle craze, Sudoku, at the library this Saturday, Feb. 23, at 2 pm when the Vineyard Gazette crossword and Sudoku challenge will take place. (I am told that Sudoku is "like crosswords but with numbers instead of words." Go figure.) Puzzle sheets for both adults and young people will be available. The four top winners will receive $25 gift certificates for the Bunch of Grapes bookstore, courtesy of the Gazette. So sharpen your wits and your pencils and dive in. There is no admission charge and everyone is welcome. For more information, please call the library at 508-645-3360.
Congratulations to Michael Pachico who made the dean's list at Bridgewater State College, School of Arts and Science, for the fall 2007 term. Michael is the son of Kim and Charles Pachico.
Pastor Rich Rego has a talent for bringing people together, and his latest project is the parish house coffeehouse at the Trinity parish house in Oak Bluffs, where top hits from the 60s and 70s, country gold and southern gospel led by gospel singer Bernie Allain will ring out this Saturday, Feb. 23, from 7 to 9 pm. If you have questions, call Mr. Rego at 508-693-0589
If it's true that misery loves company, misery is in fine shape these days what with large sections of the population sidelined with colds/flu/whatever. It's chicken soup time, and copious doses of hot tea and just plain water are recommended as well.
