Winter reading series
In collaboration with the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, the West Tisbury library hosts a free winter reading series each Wednesday in March. It is a great opportunity to listen to award-winning writers and poets, as well as exciting emerging writers. Come meet them and listen as they read their work and talk about their craft.
The first reading, on March 5, will feature the Fine Arts Work Center's fiction fellow Amanda Rea, and poetry fellow Nancy Kathleen Pearson. The readings begin at 5:30. Refreshments will be served. 508-693-3366.
Take a seat
The M.V. Film Festival would like to borrow couches for five days, from March 13 to March 17, in exchange for three film tickets and a gift bag. The society will pick them up and return them to you. And don't worry about damage - the couches will be covered throughout the event. To donate, call Brad Westcott at 508-645-9599 or email him at bwestcott@mviff.org.
The Festival is also looking for volunteers who love films to be part of their production teams. For more information, call Molly Purves at 917-406-8943 or email mlpurves@yahoo.com. Festival dates are March 14-16.
A date with Oscar
Richard Paradise of the Martha's Vineyard Film Society hosted an Oscar party last Sunday night, Feb. 24, to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the Academy Awards.
The special guest of the evening was an authentic Oscar, brought to the party by Ian Slander. Mr. Slander's father won the award in 1948 for his short film documentary, made while serving in the Army Signal Corp.
M.V. Film Society member Kathy Rose won the Oscar pool, and she was awarded a Film Festival VIP pass for the September festival.
Mr. Paradise looks forward to next year's party, and thanks the Oyster Bar Grill, specifically Michael Gillespie and Matt Ryan.
Trivial matters
Trivia fans have been packing The Newes in Edgartown each Tuesday evening just for the fun of it. Ray Whitaker, MC and trivia master, runs the game as he did at the Outerland. Many of the same people have followed the game to The Newes, filling the venue.
Get a team together, get there early, and be ready for some hard questions and great fun, which starts at 7 pm.
Trivia night at The Newes From America, at the Kelly House, Edgartown. Tuesday, 7 pm. For more information, 508-627-4397
Folk music series
The Woods Hole Folk Music Society series continues on Sunday, March 2 with a performance of Australian classics by folk singer Martyn Wyndham-Read. An Englishman by birth, the singer developed his interest in folk songs of the Outback after moving to Australia in the early 60s and gaining firsthand experience as a bush worker at a sheep station. During subsequent travels he sought out and learned old songs directly from drovers, cane cutters and other bush workers, performing them to audiences across Australia. After seven years, he returned to England and has since been performing his music across the globe.
With a strong, pleasant voice and accompanying himself on guitar, Martyn Wyndham-Read weaves in anecdotes on Australian history and culture with an engaging, offbeat sense of humor. His recording career spans 35 years with some 32 albums to his credit.
The concert takes place at 7:30 pm in the Community Hall at 68 Water Street in Woods Hole. Doors open at 7 pm. Admission is $12 or $10 for members with discounts for senior citizens and children.
