A soldier's story
This Monday, an Israeli army soldier will present a slide show, "Breaking the Silence," at the M.V. Hebrew Center. Dotan Greenvald of Haifa was drafted in 2002 and trained as a sniper. He spent three years in service, and is currently studying to become a tour guide in Israel. The event is on March 10 at 7:30 pm, and is sponsored by the Social Action Committee of M.V. Hebrew Center, as well as Brit Tzedek v'Shalom and Rabbis for Human Rights-North America. For more information, call 508-645-3169.
Love by the boxful
The annual Tisbury School food drive took place between Feb. 5 and Feb. 14 and netted more than 30 boxes of food for the Island Food Pantry. The "Share the Love" food drive was organized by fourth-grade teacher Veronika Van de Geer.

Fireside dinner
Sail M.V. presents its last fireside dinner of the season at the Black Dog Tavern, this time with Marc Songini, the author of "The Lost Fleet: A Yankee Whaler's Struggle Against the Confederate Navy and Arctic Disaster." He will speak on whaling heroes of Martha's Vineyard, such as Nathaniel and Jared Jernegan, George Fred Tilton, and Hartson Bodfish. Admission is $20 for adults, $12 for children. Serve yourself
Serve New England, a food coop with 350 locations in New England, is having a sign-up this Sunday, March 9. From 12:15 to 1 pm, visit the Unitarian Church in Vineyard Haven to sign up for the food service. The organization asks for two hours of volunteer service per month to be a member. Music for the soul
A free music therapy workshop will be held at Windemere Nursing and Rehabilitation Center with Karen Wacks (LMHC, MTBC), a music therapy professor at Berklee College of Music. The M.V. Chris Pitt is Edgartown spelling champ
Eighth grader Chris Pitt won the Edgartown School spelling bee competition held on Feb. 20. Sixth grader Alice Keenan, the second place finisher, was a strong competitor. Chris and Alice went head to head for nine of the spelling bee's 15 rounds.
All is well
The Cape and Islands Wellness Expo, a two-day event, will be held at the Hyannis Resort & Conference Center on Saturday and Sunday, March 8 and 9. In addition to products, services, and expert advice from health practitioners, the keynote speaker on Saturday from 2 to 4 pm, will be famed author/lecturer Dr. Bernie Siegel (Love, Medicine and Miracles).
