Charity hoops marathon in Chilmark

Dozens of basketball nuts — young and old, novice and proficient — turned the court behind the Chilmark Community Center into a celebration of sweat, hustle, and fun a couple of Sundays back. The hoops madness was the 22nd Annual Alex Cohen Memorial Basketball Marathon for Charity. One of the founders of the marathon, who spent summers in Chilmark where he played and worked at the Center, Alex Cohen died way too young in 1991. Pledges gathered by the ball players are distributed to Island charities in the name of Alex Cohen who loved the Center and was dedicated to the welfare of the less fortunate among us.
