Water Resource Intern
From about June 17, 2013 to August 30, 2013
Job Description- The Intern will have two sets of responsibilities:
Water Sampling and Processing: Sampling from coastal ponds and processing to prepare samples for lab analysis. Using GPS to navigate to established testing stations and to map other water-related data (e.g. the perimeters of eel grass beds and invasive species, the locations water wells and storm drains). Data entry and processing in Excel spreadsheets.
Coastal Ponds Website: Summarize scientific reports and write descriptions of various issues related to nitrogen-loading in coastal ponds. Upload these documents to the website. Skills required:
Use of Excel spreadsheets for data entry and display.
Familiarity with the use of water quality meters for field data collection. Familiarity with the use of GPS for recording positions. Correction and exporting as GIS shape files is a plus. An ability to swim is required and experience with snorkeling is a plus. Some knowledge through college level courses in oceanography, marine botany/biology, field mapping, chemistry and lab work.
Ability to row a small boat/kayak is necessary and knowledge of the use of small outboard motors is a plus. Basic laboratory skills including measuring liquid volumes, diluting chemicals to desired concentration and use of vacuum filtration equipment. Experience with writing and analyzing technical reports. Ability to translate scientific and technical information into documents understandable by the general public. Experience in collecting and processing water resource quality samples is a plus. Familiarity and comfort with websites including uploading documents. The successful applicant must provide his or her own vehicle for job-related travel. The starting hours will vary with the tides and will include some early starts before 7 a.m.
This position is paid on an hourly basis, depending on experience, for a 37.5-hour work week and may begin on or about June 3, 2013. Housing is not provided.
