Edgartown Great Pond
When SMC’s clients purchased a 100-acre parcel on the Pond and gave 86 acres to the Nature Conservancy, they conveyed their concerns about environmental sensitivity. The design became as much about the siting and lack of intrusion on the fragile plain as it was about the building aesthetics and function.
Well back from the shore and tucked into the trees that dot the savannah-like landscape, the house is nearly invisible from the pond.
Inside, the rustic aesthetic derives from the deep patina of the many reclaimed materials and gnarly trees harvested directly from the site. The clients also wanted their home to be energy neutral, so when their application for a wind turbine was turned down by the town they agreed to fill the south side of the roof with solar electric panels.
This does the job!
