Island trevale teams score at hoops
The Vineyard girls and boys basketball travel teams faced some strong competition over the weekend.
The seventh grade girls faced a tough Dartmouth squad Saturday at the Oak Bluffs school and played them straight up until the visitors pulled away in the second half for a 38-26 win. Mya Houston scored six points for M.V. Sam Hargy and Erin Hill added five apiece.
The girls rebounded nicely on Sunday in Barnstable. They blasted the Red Raiders 51-12. Erin Hill led the way with 12 points. Emily Turney drained a three-pointer and scored 11.
M.V. plays Sandwich in Oak Bluffs on Saturday at 12:20 pm.
Two for fifth
The fifth grade girls played twice Sunday at Bourne Middle School and left with two decisive wins.
Against Bourne, Molly DeBettencourt scored 10 points and paced the Vineyarders to a 28-12 victory. Devin Hill tossed in eight points and Kat Roberts had six.
In game two, M.V. sank the Lakeville Lakers 38-4. Again Bettencourt (18 points), Hill (6), and Roberts (6) provided the scoring punch.
M.V. returns to Bourne Middle School Sunday for their next contest, against Dartmouth.
The eighth grade boys travel team hosted Bourne, Saturday, and traveled to Falmouth on Sunday.
Against Bourne, M.V. seized control from the opening tip and dominated at both ends of the floor to post a 63-9 win.
Tim Roberts was the high scorer for the Vineyarders with 18 points. Ben Poole added 12 and Matt Stone and Mike Mussell had eight each.
Sunday's tilt with league powerhouse Falmouth was a nail-biter as M.V. toughed out a 41-38 win.
The Vineyard survived a slow start thanks to the aggressive play of Brandon Dwane and Ben Poole. M.V. also switched from a zone defense to man-to-man and held the hosts to 14 points at halftime.
Alex GordonBeck led the Vineyarders with 13 points. Ben Dwane and Colin Cameron had six each.
The boys host Barnstable at the Oak Bluffs School Sunday at 10am.
