Helping hands

The Vineyard Committee on Hunger (VCOH) is seeking $25 donations to provide Island families in need with a Thanksgiving meal. With the help of Reliable Market and several local houses of worship, over 120 meals were served last year. This year, Reliable will put together a complete Thanksgiving basket with everything from turkey to apples. VCOH also seeks donations for Christmas meals. To donate, send checks made out to Vineyard Committee on Hunger and mail them to P.O. Box 1874, Vineyard Haven, MA 02568. For more information, call Betty Burton at 508-693-5339 or email burtonsundman@hotmail.com.

Turkey Open

Sign up now for the 13th annual Turkey Open at the Vineyard Tennis Center Workout and Spa, being held next weekend from Friday to Sunday, Nov. 14 to 16. A benefit for the Island Food Pantry this year, it's a mixed doubles tournament where the winners get turkeys. There are no required entry fees, but players are encouraged to donate non-perishable food items or cash. Call the center at 508-696-8000 or email workout568@aol.com to sign up.

Planting for the future

The West Tisbury kindergarten harvested 20 pounds of sweet potatoes from the school garden the week of October 20. Planted by last year's kindergarten class as a gift to this year's class, the potatoes were cooked three different ways and offered to the kindergarten and first- and second-graders. Teacher Victoria Riger Phillips looks forward to planting potatoes this spring for next year's class.

Islanders in Falmouth

Four Island students who attend Falmouth Academy will perform in the school's fall play, "The Ash Girl." On Friday and Saturday, Nov. 7 and 8 at 7 pm, see Niole Nelson and Lagan Trieschmann of Vineyard Haven, Emelia Armstead of Edgartown, and Kinsman Maynard of Chilmark perform in the play, written by Timberlake Wertenbaker. Inspired from tales such as those of the Brothers Grimm, the play follows Ash Girl and her struggle to overcome her grief. The play will finish in time for Islanders to make the 9:45 pm ferry. Admission is free, but cast and crew encourage the audience to bring a non-perishable food item for the Falmouth Service Center.

Applause for Ms. Berg

Last Saturday afternoon, many gathered at the Sailing Camp in Oak Bluffs, the scene of many of her plays, to honor Linda Berg, music director of Island Theatre Workshop for more than 10 years. As music director, Ms. Berg wrote original scores for adult productions, and for Children's Theatre she composed songs and taught them to young actors, many of whom attended the party.
