Have fun on Saturday at the Miniature Golf Tournament. This will help to pay for the Tisbury eighth-graders' trip to Washington, D.C. The tournament will be from 1 to 4 pm at Island Mini Golf. Rain date is Sunday. Tickets are $10 per adult, $5 for children 5 to 12, and $25 for two adults and two children. Tickets are also available at Shirley's Hardware.
MSNBC will show "Witness to Jonestown" on Sunday at 9 pm. The full-length documentary marks the 30th anniversary of this American tragedy. Our own Heather Chapman is the associate producer of this MSNBC film.
Tuesday is Veterans Day. Ed Colligan wants your help. You and other volunteers will put up 410 flags on the Avenue of Flags. Just show up at Oak Grove Cemetery at 7:30 am to put them up. Then at 3 o'clock more help is needed to take them down. Do it in memory of your own veterans and to say thanks to all those soldiers standing up for us now. If you cannot help, take the time to visit and show your respect for the veterans.
"Let's Make Some Pins!" on Wednesday at the Senior Center with Sally Flood. From 1 to 3 pm, Sally will teach you how to make a pin to wear on your jacket or sweater. The pins will have a gloss finish and feature your choice of color to match the season or favorite outfit. Sign up now. Make an extra one as a stocking stuffer for a friend.
Dr. Leslie Howard took the best of show award for her hand-pieced and hand-quilted underground railroad quilt. This was at the knit and quilt exhibit held last month at the Clark House. The knitting best of show award went to Marion Burke for her lovely blue lace shawl. Lynne Benson still has some knitted entries to be picked up at the Heath Hen Quilt & Yarn Shop. The shop will be closed next week and will reopen November 19. Fall hours are 10 am to 4 pm on Wednesday through Saturday. Mark your calendar now for the Islanders Sale on the Friday after Thanksgiving.
There is something special about one family helping another family during the holidays. Again this year the Vineyard Committee on Hunger (VCOH), along with Reliable Market and several local houses of worship, are working together to provide a great holiday meal for our Island families in need.
Reliable Market will put together a special Thanksgiving Basket that includes turkey, stuffing, five pounds of potatoes, cranberry sauce, dinner rolls, two pounds of onions, one pound of carrots, three pounds apples, fresh butternut squash, canned pumpkin and gravy. They provided a wonderful complete meal for the holidays last December for $25. Share your blessings with your neighbors.
You are asked to contribute $25, the cost of one family's meal. Last year over 120 meals were provided for each of the holidays. But they ran out of meals. Make your check out to VCOH, for Family-to-Family, then send it to PO Box 1874, Vineyard Haven 02568.
Have you read your car lately? As someone said recently, one or two bumper stickers can tell you a lot about the person who owns the car. But many more only tell you that the owner is not sure who he is. Sometimes a bumper sticker seems to mean one thing, but when you get close enough to read it, the message is very different. At least it keeps us entertained in slow traffic.
Big bunches of birthday balloon wishes go out today to Sam Myers and Marilyn O'Callaghan. Happy birthday tomorrow to Buffy Hanschka, Hugh Knipmeyer, and Priscilla Dickson.
