sheep, Martha's Vineyard
Mother Joey and baby Jingles eye visitors to their barn, two days after a Christmas morning birth.

The arrival of Jingles

After opening gifts on Christmas morning with his wife and children, Brian Athearn of Runamok Farm in West Tisbury stepped out into the mild morning to tend to his animals and feed his small herd of sheep. A tiny bleating coming from the stall alerted him to a gift he hadn't counted on: two lambs were born in the wee hours to Joey the ewe, whom he hadn't even known was pregnant. "We just thought she was extra fluffy," said Kate Athearn, Brian's wife. Joey lost the weak twins she delivered last spring, and her Christmas delivery wasn't without difficulty - only one lamb survived, and she is blind in one eye and unable to nurse. Named Jingles, the lamb is now housed in her own little barn close to the house, where she is bottle-fed and looked over carefully by the Athearns' children, 7-year-old Hunter and 5-year-old Emmett.
